The Alpha build version of the game was originally called 'Pentad', nicknamed after one of our professors.

The Beta build was later renamed as 'Turnstyle' to focus on the main combat mechanic of the game and a nod to the chic outfits of the characters.

Pentad Alpha Prototype

For Pentad, we came together over lunch to figure out what kind of game we wanted to make. Ideas were passed around between sandwich bites and sushi but nothing was sticking. One idea came to my mind but it was difficult describing it with words.

Luckily I had some Yu-gi-oh cards on hand and laid five of them on the table. With the cards, I mimic the circluar motion of combat to make the game fast-paced. The programmers immediately got excited and off the idea went to be tweaked until a protoype was made.

In our excitement my 'Slipher the Sky Dragon' card got scratched up. The scratches made the card shiner and I held onto it as a keepsake.

Although the Alpha version needed the inspection log open to see the output, it was a fairly successful prototype. I even got to put in a little programming practice before it was finished.

Rotating between charcters

Characters switched

The next quarter was coming around so people had to decide whether to stay with this team or to join another one. I decided to work on a new project and didn't work on a majority of the Beta Turnstyle build.

But I did eventually return the following summer. I came back to provide some extra assistance for the Beta build's bonus chapters.

For these bonus chapters, I spent most of my time attending the meetings, looking over the narrative scripts, and playtesting.

It wouldn't take long for the extra chapters to be finished and we enjoyed the rest of our summer.

There was an in-person reunion in June 2023 but I wasn't able to attend because of final exams. It was still good to hear that my other teammates had some fun catching up.
